Several owners have had issues with the shifter, below is the thread about the conversion to rotary knob....

https://www.f150lightningforum.com/...ion-w-3d-printed-rotary-shifter-holder.25541/
I just went and tried to fold down the shifter in my truck, which I never do normally, and it wouldn’t work. Can hear a click where it’s trying to stow away and then it does nothing.

So I’m certainly thinking it’s the shifter. Question is, how confident can I be using the truck in the meantime and what issues could I be facing? I’m supposed to go on a camping trip this weekend using the truck, would you attempt such a thing right after getting this issue? Anyone else?

Hey,

My 2024 Lightning XLT SR which has previously had a host of other issues threw me a new one today that I would like to seek the forums input on if I may.

Today when I started up the truck it brought up an orange wrench saying service soon and I got a notification in FordPass about Powertrain malfunction/4x4 issue, which I know from reading here has been an issue faced by some, but has everyone else had their power reduced? My power gauge is still at 100% (battery around 70%) and the truck functioned completely normal on the twenty minute highway-speed drive home.
Obviously concerning. Tried power cycling truck to see if it would go away but it did not.
Put it on the level 2 charger when I got home just now and it seems to be charging normally.
Any thoughts or anyone experienced anything similar?
Thanks in advance.
I have has six yellow wrenches, and one red In 8 months. Seems whole truck is one big circuit, anything goes down it shoots the PM/RP error. Two cab heater cores, one 12 volt battery, and latest the gear shifter broke.

How did it play out with the gear shifter breaking? Will it eventually just not shift into gear and I’ll be stranded?

Good question, it stopped storing shifter in the tray. Yellow wrenches, took I in and they replaced it. Did not interfere with drive.

I have a similar issue, wrench and alert every time I start the vehicle. I still have full power. Dealership checked the codes and said it is a problem with a coolant system valve. The part was originally supposed to come in at the end of March, but now they are telling me the end of June. I explicitly asked if it was ok to still drive and was told yes.

Keep an eye on your battery & motor temperature gauges when driving in hot conditions or DCFC charging.

Thank you.
I do regularly look at the gauges, and they are always spot-on. But will keep that in mind.

Some of us collect the notices like trading cards, but as long as the power stays at 100% (which mine always has) it's likely either the air dam sensor(s) or the shifter about to cause larger problems. During the middle of one of the below notices I started getting a clicking from the shifter handle, so I'm joining others in changing over to a rotary shifter as noted in other threads.

I love the rotary shifter and 3d printed holder. The stick was junk and hopefully Ford deletes it and swaps in a rotary!

I just had the same issue last week. When the tech checked codes there was a P0929-77 Diagnostic code in memory. The Gear Shift Module was replaced to resolve the Diagnostic Code.
----------------
From Service Invoice below.

P0929-77 Diagnostic code PRESENT IN MEMORY

c/s 5/14/25 5:44 PM GOT IN THE TRUCK AND WHEN OPENED THE
DOOR THE SCREENS CAME ON AS EXPECTED, DROVE ABOUT 10 MINUTES
OR SO AND RECEIVED A POWER MALFUNCTION/REDUCED POWER AND HAD
A YELLOW WRENCH ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, POWER
AVALIABILITY ON THE LEFT OF THE DRIVER'S SCREEN SHOWED 100%
POWER AND TRUCK WAS DRIVING NORMALLY, ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER
THE YELLOW WRENCH WENT AWAY. CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO ERRORS
DISPLAYED ON THE CENTER SCREEN, BUT FORD PASS STILL SHOWS
POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION
P0929-77 Diagnostic code PRESENT IN MEMORY

C/A CONCERN RESOLVED WITH GSM REPLACEMENT /TSB

I have the same issue randomly. It is a shifter module issue. When I have the wrench displayed depressing the shift lever down button, does not retract the shift lever. Next day issue is gone. Ford dealer says I have to bring it in when the wrench is displayed on the screen. (Even though they can see the malfunction history on the car). Sucks
I had this issue when I first bought the truck (2023 xlt lighting) they replaced the module and fixed it for about 4-5 months. Now it is back (sometimes).

I currently have a model 3 Tesla performance, previously had a Model Y; 2 of my kids have Tesla model Ys.

Love my truck! but “it ain’t no Tesla”
Should not have to live with an issue like this.

As for the codes that get sent/stored on the Ford side, apparently mine has one for the shifter and also has one for the air dam... so I'm about to replace the shifter with the rotary dial in a few days, and we'll see if that makes and issue go away and if not I hope it at least narrows it down to only the air dam code (fingers crossed).

Just had this start happening to me today. Air Dam functions, the shifter functions, and charging appears normal. No issues with temps either. I have full power but get a "Service Soon" wrench shortly after turning the vehicle on and driving. Really unfortunate timing considering I am driving 2,400 miles to relocate for work in a week and really need my truck to make it.

Mine also was functioning absolutely fine but had the wrench and Powertrain fault. Brought it to the dealer and they confirmed via code that the shifter was the cause. Ordered the part and it arrived 3 days later. It’s been fine since.
