So I bought my truck (‘24 Lariat) in march. There was an OTA update in April and that’s the only one I’ve ever got (advisor confirmed). I brought it into the dealer for the control arm recall and the advisor said there is a bunch of updates and codes on the truck that need to be done/cleared and I’ll have to reschedule another service or leave it there for days. My question is are there software updates that don’t get pushed OTA that only the dealer can do? Service advisor was pretty vague when I asked about them being pushed OTA.

Very very few modules are not updateable via the OTA process. The OTA is process is unreliable and unpredictable. There is no way to predict when any vehicle will get an update nor is there is a way to speed up the OTA process or force an OTA to be sent. All you can do it pray that the OTA gods shine their light upon thee.

On the bright side, maybe you walk away with BC 1.4!

I go in for the same recall Friday. I doubt they offer any updates.

Just beware that sometimes the Ford giveth, and sometimes the Ford taketh away.

I had a similar situation happen with my MachE, I brought it in to put the summer tires back on and when the service intake person brought it up, I noticed that there were 14 updates not done. I pushed to have them updated and they informed me I would need to pay for them unless the car was malfunctioning. After some frustration with understanding the process, the car started to do some odd things like speed up when on cruise when the speed limit dropped. Nothing like doing 80 km and then in a 50 km zone, you speed up. Long story short, all updated and fine. Better yet, no cost.
The important thing to understand is that Ford gets parts from many suppliers. So one backup camera maybe from two different suppliers. One needs an update, the other does not. So updates can in fact cause an issue. So many not all updates are needed and some could cause another issue. I would take a screen shot of what needs to be updated and save it just in case your vehicle starts acting up. You need to be a participant in the vehicle health. You are driving a computer now. Hope this helps a bit? I also have a Ford Lightning but no issues as of yet since it is only about a year old.

My recommendation to you is : take them up on their offer and schedule the update. Not many dealerships are that proactive and willing to do it for free.

It's rough first pass but here goes:

The OTA Prayer (or perhaps "The Ford's Prayer")

Our Ford Motor Company who art in cloud,
harrowed be thy name.
Thy software may come.
Some updates may be done
on my truck as was done with Kevin's.
Give us this day our software update,
and forgive us our impatience,
as we forgive those who vehicles have been updated,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the Cybertruck.
For thine is the battery and the power, and the mediocore software performance,
forever and ever.

Amen.

No offence intended! :)

I had a bunch of updates that the dealer had to do, I did not have time to leave it so they offered to have a tech come to my house and do the work. He sat in my driveway for an hour and did the work.

Update:
Brought it to the dealer I bought the truck from to perform a the updates. They said my truck was up to date. They didn’t even hook it up. Information was just based on my VIN I guess. So I guess it was a wasted trip. Why would the other dealership say I had all these modules that need updated and the next say I don’t? Is there more information that can be seen when hooked up to a computer? I asked him to hook it up but he said it wasn’t even necessary because it wouldn’t tell them anything different than what he was seeing.

Ford does not pay them to update modules just because they aren't up to date. They most likely said it was up to date to get you to go away.

Wait, so you went to a different dealer than the one you said had updates? Your message said “why would the other dealer…”

As others noted, this is a super rare thing the dealer offered. I don’t believe Ford will generally pay for it unless they are diagnosing another issue.

I guarantee you have modules that have updates. I suspect fewer than 1% of Ford vehicles built after 2020 are driving around without modules that need updates. I can check my truck in OASIS and I have like 13 modules with available updates. Not all of them go out by OTA all the time. Usually they go out as part of update packages.

Also, them saying “there are codes…”, that’s another thing that basically every vehicle has. I check on our vehicles all the time and family’s vehicles in OASIS. There is almost always some code stored. It’s almost never an issue if you aren’t seeing dash warnings or other issues. Network congestion can throw a code, probably the most common I see are unresponsive module codes which is usually that the network was busy and didn’t get a message from a module during the timeout window.

Sometimes module updates help with that stuff, like sending more frequent heartbeat messages or extending timeouts. Which is probably why they brought it up.

Anyway, long message to say, if you had one dealer say they would update modules, you need to go to that dealer. I don’t know of any Ford dealer that would do those for free generally without an underlying issue. Your truck not having an OTA recently isn’t an issue.

Yes. Reason being is I had this dealer fix the control arm recall. The service advisor was kind of a d**k and said he couldn’t get to the updates for another week so I told him I’d reschedule. I didn’t want to deal with him anymore so made an appointment at the dealership I bought the truck from even thought it’s a bit further away. I thought the updates were pretty routine. Had I known I would’ve just rescheduled right then and there. I’ll have to call this jerk back to reschedule I guess.
