What extra hardware is needed to get PAAK. Seems like it should just be a programming thing since we already have WAL. Along with Bluetooth and wifi.
It is not possible, there is a considerable set of extra hardware and wiring required (the external Bluetooth antennas), let alone programming every step of the way, including hypothetically on Ford's servers so the the app allows a PaaK to be deployed to your vehicle, so even if it was technically possible (it is not) it would not be DIY-able.

That is why Flash does not have PaaK - to lower the cost.

what hardware is required for PAAK?

A LOT!

Along with wiring.

Bluetooth antennas in the doors, tailgate and front bumper. RFA in the console. A bunch of programming changes. Along with new door handles front and rear the door handles are different from passive entry to PAAK.

Its a lot and the Flash doesnt have pAAK.

Not to mention the sever side changes required.

I added blue cruise and made it work on a 21 XL F150 and wouldnt think of adding PAAK.

I got this three days ago. Took about two minutes and while Ford said I needed a fob, it did not use it in the update
Did you have the fob with you? I think that is all it was needed for.

I tried without the Fob and it told me to go get mine during the part where it wanted me to enter a new backup start code.

Never asked me for a backup start code.
It may have been able to see the fob before I went and got it. It was only about 50ft away.

Mine also walked me through the Backup and Door code setup. I had the fob in the truck.

I updated in my '22 Lightning yesterday. The PAAK update worked without issue, but the new backup passcode is failing with a "see dealership" error after entering the new password twice. I haven't started looking for fixes yet, but will report back if I find out anything.
I just did the update in my 2023 Lariat ER - it too failed the passcode reset. Twice. So I went in thru the main screen and reset it there without issue. See if that works.

Any noticeable PAAK improvement?
Working the same for me. I think it's all about Ford has updated some ciphers or infrastructure that maybe makes them more secure? Not sure. I don't think there is any "improvement" we would see. The hardware on the truck and the phone are the same and this doesn't install any new SW, just a new key.

Did you have your FOB with you when you setup the backup passcode?

I was able to reset my PAAK but unable to reset the backup passcode after several attempts. I don't have access to my FOB and won't for awhile.

I do have access to my wife's FOB and her backup passcode still works so at least I shouldn't be stranded.

I had my fob with me and had no problem with the PaaK reset. However, after three attempts at the backup passcode I gave up. I already had 2 passcodes in place. Hopefully the truck will quit asking me to set another one up.

I guess we need a guinea pig, who is willing to try and update their PAAK without getting their FOB? I need to check my partners phone, if he needs the update then I'll try it without the fob tonight.
Got the notice today and came here to check it out. Accepted your challenge! All fobs in a Faraday bag. I went through the steps on the FP app with no issue - start truck, delete old code, pair with BT, etc. I then got a PAAK active confirmation which also wanted me to create a Backup code.
Ford F-150 Lightning Phone as a key update required 1752713871957-8k

The Sync screen came alive with instructions. I chose my phone but it wouldn't continue - said I needed the phone AND fob. So took out one of the fobs and was able to set up a new pass code for it. I then chose to keep my existing door code.

Thanks for the experiment and confirmation. I couldn't remember the steps from setting this up originally. Although no interaction with the fob it detects is presence. I need to go digging, but I'm guessing that it is also associating the phone with the profile that fob is associated with.

That association with profile settings 1 or 2 used to be much more clear in the early days of the SW. That screen no longer exists like it did originally.
