I got in my truck this morning after having it parked all weekend plugged in to find this message. I'm gonna call Ford and "hope" they have someone who knows anything about the Lightning but I figured I'd check here first to see if anyone else has gotten this message and what it might be. I have a '23 ER Lariat, interestingly, this popped up right at the 38,000 mile mark. Could be coincidence?

My guess, based on your location, is that this is the motorized assembly in the shifter failing.

You might notice that the shifter is attempting to automatically return to park even though it’s already in park.

For me whenever I get this error, there’s a slight, repetitive mechanical/gear movement of the shifter as if it can’t determine that it’s in Park and is still trying to shift farther up. These errors started when I was in Los Angeles and went away when I go to a cooler location. And then earlier this week I was in Phoenix and it immediately started throwing these errors. I just replaced the shifter with a rotary dial about 20 minutes ago. I’ll be heading to Phoenix this evening and expect not to see this error again.

After you’ve had the dealer fail to fix it multiple times by replacing the shifter with the same part, there’s a thread on here in which people have discussed how to replace the shifter with a rotary dial.

Very common. If you scroll to the bottom of your thread you’ll see Similar Threads. At least 5 with the exact title as yours. Wide range of possible issues.

I got a video message from the Ford dealer saying i have a battery module that needs to be replaced. The truck battery percentage is at 79% now on the Ford Pass app. I'm not sure if the 82% showing as state of charge is the battery health or just what the actual "current" state of charge is. I'd like to see a test showing what my HV battery health is.

The cell level SOC's are always higher than your visible SOC on the dash and Ford App.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case but I'm trying to see if the dealer can/will run a test to show me the actual state of health for the high voltage battery since it's already in the shop. Looks like they are gonna replace the one cell that is showing less charge than the others.

I’m betting you are still under battery/drive train warranty. 8/100k miles.

A Hassle no matter how you slice it, but it won’t cost you for the repair.

Cell replacement is not covered by Ford. Module replacement is.

yep, they said it was covered, I just want to find out the battery SOH while it's in the shop. I asked them to run the test but they haven't responded yet.

when you say only the module replacement, do you mean the series of cells within a module? Just curious if that means I'll get multiple cells replaced instead of just one, which seems like a good thing.

Yes. A module is comprised of multiple cells. The module that has the bad cell will be replaced.

well, then depending on how many cells are in a module I'll be getting several new cells so that's not too bad.

Your truck will get a NEW module 2 which contains cells 12 to 22.

The defective module with the one bad cell will be recycled.

Those numbers, the cell voltages, are the SOC of the cells, not the state of health.

To know the state of health (SOH), the present energy capacity vs that when new (100%), you could use CarScanner for example.

Another less reliable way is to charge the battery to 100% and see what the guess-o-meter says the range is and compare that to your original range (not as accurate because recent driving will affect the guess).

If the capacity (SOH) falls below 70% of the original within the warranty period 8 years or 100k miles, then Ford has to do something about it either repair or replacement.

PS: you should be able to get the dealer/Ford to do the analysis, esp if your expected range drops 30% under normal conditions.
