This should be a State to State road tax…. again the Federal bureaucracy (unfortunately) is reaching into our pockets

sw engineering manager,
The feds do build roads as well as States. Only makes sense. As long as the money goes back into roads. Vehicles are useless without roads to drive them on.

I guess we should have expected it as many states (including here in Texas) have added an additional fee to EVs on the annual registration fees to make up for the fact that we do not contribute to fuel sales which is where they get their road taxes to pay for new/repair roads. I don’t mind paying my fair share as long as it is only my fair share!!

The way I see it the $7500 tax rebate I received when I purchased my Lightning if they charge me $250 per year, then I’m ahead until 31 years from purchase.

Federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon so that’s around 114 gallons a month equivalent on $250 per year. 20 miles per gallon that’s 2280 miles per month so the fee is a little high probably should be closer to $150-$200.
If you discount your future $250 annual tax back to present value at 5% then you will still have $1,290 present day dollars in your pocket after 100 years. I just hope they really use the tax revenue to maintain highways.

Do the feds get a cut of Gas tax? This is what they are trying to replace by targeting EVs?
In almost all states, there are two excise taxes on fuel, a state and a federal tax.

This represents only the federal taxes that applies to ALL states.

They could add a line entry on Form 720 for business entities, and then a line entry on form 1040 for individual/personal entities.

BTW, LUST isn't what you might think it is, it's "Leaking Underground Storage Tank"

That's cool but seems way overcomplicated. Every state does an annual inspection on vehicles.
Not every state. Maryland only does inspections when you get your vehicle tagged. After that you don't get an inspection ever, unless you let the tags expire and had to get them again.

Edit: looks like I'm wrong, some counties in Maryland do require periodic testing but mine doesn't. Odd.

few states give you bonuses for EV, not Indiana I have to pay $175 extra per year in registration costs for ev, as a way to recoup gas taxes, but IN gas taxes per gallon is 35 cents that is 500 gallons of fuel equiv, in model 3 most common ev on road, that would be like 20k miles, but average drive likely drives 10-12k a year, and state of Indiana has taxes on electric so to say the least im not happy. I think $50-100 would have been more fair

Almost no states have annual inspections, though some have emissions testing in certain areas.

How about dropping all the EV registration penalties and use the purchase rebate / incentives to cover the gas tax losses for Fed and state. Oh wait those are going away too…

I paid $1120 to register my 2023 Lightning Platinum in CA. And they need $250 more?
It’s getting to be ridiculous. Plus we pay $0.31 per KWH here. Of course Gas here is also expensive. Do the feds get a cut of Gas tax? This is what they are trying to replace by targeting EVs?
I'm paying $0.51 kW here in SF Bay Area....

$600 registration fee I just paid should be sufficient as EV penalty to pay for the roads.
Try $1160.00 in The Nation of California. Getting very tired of all the Democrats led taxes. Now the State Assembly has a bill AB1145 being proposed to create a road tax, yes every mile driven you will pay. Don’t pay any attention to the false narrative coming out of the press saying it’s only 2.5 cents per mile. It will be over 9 cents a mile. This will include EVs and gas vehicles. Also there is nothing in the bill to do away with the .56 cents per gallon of gas sold in CA, but they SAY the gas tax will be removed.? and I want to sell you a bridge in the desert.
