I love 1 pedal driving. But was curious about when it stops. It feels like the brakes engage but the Brake hold indicator is not lit. Only if you tap the brake pedal does it come on. So are the brakes actually applied when you roll to a stop? ( it feels like they are) or only if you tap the brake pedal

I believe the friction brakes are applied when the truck comes to a stop. In my observations if you are stopped in a hill with your foot off all pedals the truck remains stationary. If you apply a small amount of accelerator input the truck might actually roll backwards. I think what is happening is the friction brakes are applied until you touch the accelerator. If you don't have enough accelerator there's not enough power to overcome gravity.

- yes, one-pedal applies and HOLDS the brakes, until you release them by using the GO pedal

- the HOLD function is not needed with one-pedal driving mode, since the mode itself is already applying the brakes

- the HOLD function, in other modes, applies when the truck's brakes are applied by the driver
and the truck is at a full stop

I also love 1PD, it’s like becoming “one” with the truck. I do get in the habit of pressing the brake after I stop, if I’m in traffic. I have visions of accidentally tapping the accelerator and smashing the car in front - which I can’t do if I’m pressing on the brake…

I know this is an old post, but only one I could find on this subject. Is there any way to disable the friction brakes at a stop? On the chevy EV's, the drive holds the car at a stop without any brake application. This works on hills, etc. flawlessly. I've noticed in one pedal driving if you come to a stop and keep very slight pressure on the accelerator pedal, the brakes don't engage and the truck still remains stopped, so I know the drive can hold the truck without the brakes. The brakes are annoying and never seem to engage smoothly is why I ask.

You sure about that? From a physics point of view, that would be difficult (not impossible) and consume power (read that as a "waste of power"). The other part is that you really do want the friction brakes to operate at least once in a while to keep the parts functioning and keep the rotors from rusting - there is a recent thread about someone failing a vehicle inspection due to the rotor surfaces being rusted.

I'm 100% positive. No friction brake engagement whatsoever on the GM EV's in 1-pedal. And it's way smoother than the ford at stops. Excercising brakes is always good. I take my truck out of 1-pedal periodically and work the brakes.

Taking it out of 1pd won't automatically engage the brakes. Ford uses regen first for all braking, never engaging the friction brakes unless needed.

Pure drive only stops are not really practical since regen decreases dramatically with speed. At low speeds, say under 5mph, it is practically non existant. To hold at a stop you would actively need to be powering the motors, wasting a fair amount of energy.

I suggest either occasionally putting the truck in neutral at high speed to condition the pads and rotors, or occasionally hard brake at high speed for the same effect 2pd drive alone won't do it
Just a couple of heavy stops engages the friction brakes just fine when not in 1-pedal. Just get out and feel the rotors. Also, when I tow my 8,000lb trailer every few weeks, the friction brakes engage. They get used often enough that I'm not worried about it.

The other one that is interesting is if you have an OBD2 reader and CarScanner, one of the pages shows brake system pressure. It's real obvious when the friction brakes take over. In the Lightning, if braking slowly, you can feel the transition at about 3 mph.

I still doubt that - but I have no way to prove it. Read the next quote:

Bingo! Bingo!
To summarize what I said originally - possible, but not practical.

I work with industrial machinery. We do pure drive stops all the time holding loads with VFD's and no brakes. The chevy rocks back and forth on the cv joints i can feel it. no brake engagement. The proof is it moves slightly. If brakes were engaged there would be no movement. So back to the original question, obviously no one knows how to disable the friction brakes at a stop. I will dive in to forscan this weekend and see if i can figure something out.

Yep, that is the indication that you would get. So why are you desiring an operation that wastes power? What's the supposed plus?

The power loss is so minimal it would far outweigh the annoyance of the mechanical brakes engaging every time the truck stops. The chevy is much nicer to drive for this reason. I'll post if i figure out a solution in forscan if anyone is interested.

I tried one pedal and maybe it's just me but having to constantly apply or release the pedal just didn't feel natural to me. I forced myself to try it for a week. Nope, y'all can have it.
Me too. Pretty much the same thing. About the only time it was at least sort of acceptable was stop / slow / go freeway rush hour traffic. Otherwise I could not stand it.

I am very happy with the regen / friction braking integration that Ford did. It works so well.

What he means is 1PD or not makes no difference. The mechanical brakes take over at the same level of braking.

If you are finding the brake disengagement from a stop annoying, you can always turn off Auto Hold in the Driver Assistance menu.
