My 2001 F-350 had the shifter on the steering column. That is the best location for that function, imho.

I'm surprised how many vehicles still use monostable gear selectors. Jeep dragged their feet on the Cherokee until the high profile case with Anton Yelchin.

I still prefer the column but that will never come back now that we shift electronically instead of mechanically. At least the rotary Ford and RAM use give a clear indication of what gear you're in at a glance. Meanwhile Cadillac's push-button shifter is awful, as are the ones in the newer GMC Sierras.

I absolutely love the buttons in my Honda Insight:

There's nothing stopping gear changes (Physical button to push like on the Lightning), or rotating and it maybe not working.
If you can't change, it just won't. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry to go, I can start the car, and just mash the D button until the car is ready to go into drive (like 2 seconds), and be off.
Doing 3-point turns is also a fun time, being able to switch between reverse and drive swiftly and smoothly.
Turn knobs are cute. But if it's in Park, and you want to go to drive, you then need to visually check to make sure it actually went to D. Maybe (if the truck was just turned on) it wasn't ready, so it didn't do anything. Ditto with going from Drive to Reverse. If you're going *just* too fast, it won't take. And with the push button, I can just hit it a few times (and see on the instrument cluster what it's in) versus rotating until it catches (and hoping it doesn't go too far and now we're in Park)
(The Insight lets me change from Drive to Reverse and back to Drive without brake pedal, and up to a few mph in speed (I never checked what speed. I'm sure it's pretty slow. But it makes for an easier shift. I can back out of a parking spot and go into drive without having to brake)). This is my golden standard until they come up with something better.
(It helps that like an EV, the Insight is mostly electric motor driven, so you can't break the transmission by shifting while tires are rotating. The engine only direct-drives the wheels at speeds over 45)

Would anyone here with a 3D printer be willing to print my own version of the console for me? I’m willing to pay for it of course.

I took the original file from Thingiverse and modified it for my use case. I tried printing it at home but my printer is old and janky and it kept failing.

If there are any takers then I’ll send the STL file over and we can discuss price.

I missed the column shifter from the Tesla 3/Y However they have now done away with even that completely. Swipe up or down on the screen. I know …….. that is gong to go too far for most.
Once again though it saves a ton on engineering, assembly, final vehicle production costs and long term repairs.

I'm in the column shifter camp. Wife has it on her Hyundai and I like it best. Can keep hand on/near the steering wheel the whole time and very intuitive once you learn it. While some of the Mach-E crowd may be up in arms, I think many are ready to embrace it.

I ran across a thread on one of the ICE forums where they are doing the same thing with the rotary shifter and 3d printing. They also referenced our lighting thread. They are saying the 2024+ ICE trucks have TRON protected GWMs on them and changing the shifter causes error messages. It works, but not without errors. Op has a 2024, so apparently it works on 2024 lightnings. It may be an issue if they put TRON on the 2025 models though.

I was very disappointed to find out TRON has nothing to do with light cycles. It stands for Trusted Realtime Operating Network (encrypted).

For anyone interested, here is that thread https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/folding-shifter-delete-rotary-knob-swap.35769

I am working a deal to lease a 2025 Lightning and I came to the forum to ask exactly this, does the 2025 model have TRON on the Gateway module?

Curious about it for this swap and using Comma 3x for FSD capabilities.

Anyone know if 2025 models have TRON encryption?

I've seen it referenced on the ICE forum, but I don't know if anyone has experience yet here. I would think the Lightning is following what they are doing there.

Just installed my version today and it worked great. I've got a handful of people to thank that made this possible.

@jmyer72 thanks for the initial idea and the link to the shifter on ebay.
@asianman35 huge thanks for printing this out for me after I was unable to print this on my own printer. He printed and shipped this thing in no time.
@ENDianDigital thanks for posting the original file on Thingiverse. I modified it to fit my Nalgene and it worked out perfectly.

I'm happy to share my version if anyone wants it.

Very happy with how it turned out!
