40,000 Service advice

Our truck is in for recall software work, and the dealer called recommending a replacement of all fluids:

-Brake
-Coolant
-AWD Transmission

for a total of $1800.

This seems nuts, the Maintenance Schedule has none of these, although I do see a couple people recommending doing the brake fluid. What would you do?

I would say, do the recall. Don't touch the fluids.

If you look in the manual (vs. Ford app), you will see some additional recommendations:

Brake fluid - every 3 years
Transmission fluid - 10 years or 150,000 miles

Coolant is not listed, it should be checked for proper strength and topped off.

Thanks, it is a bit confusing that there are some items listed in the owner's manual but not in FordPass. They should coordinate those better. I was getting a bit turned around going between the two.

I will say, I asked why all those fluids are not listed in the Maintenance Schedule, and the answer was pretty funny. "Ford keeps the schedule very general to allow for local conditions. New England conditions are harsher and blah blah blah so we <dealer> recommend every 30,000 miles." Ha ha

I’m just a few miles from 40K. Called dealership because they recommend a 40K service on the app. I called to ask how much after reading this thread. They had no idea. It took two days for them to get back to me. It was basically rotate tires and change the cabin air filter. For $167 I told them I’ll do the filter myself and pay the 29.99 for rotating tires.

I just went to Discount Tires yesterday and got my free first tire rotation. Told them I heard they do it for free and I'd likely be buying from them. Asked about new tire life and he said they have a 50,000 mile guarantee but they see many replace them after 35,000 miles. Was in and out in about a half hour. Easy peesy, no hassle, no sales pressure, and the guy was pleasant about it. The kid rotating the tires said he buffed them too although I didn't see any difference. I assume they will be holding off on the sales pitch until I'm hooked on the free tire rotations and then when I'm close to 4/32nds they will start. He did say the tire rotations are free but if I wanted them balanced then it was 15 bux per tire which I declined.

I definitely wouldn't buy tires from a dealer. I usually buy tires from Sam's but depending upon what kind I want, Discount Tires, may be the better option and they would be better for scheduling rotations as Sam's is always busy and you can't just drive by and drop in.

Do the recall and do not touch the fluids. As soon as they mentioned AWD transmission it was evident that don’t know squat about EVs.
The service dept reps at the front office have no idea what your Lightning has on.

If you find that what they are suggesting is way out of line compared to the manual, I would put that dealership on blast via social media. Protect others from being ripped off
