Wonder if they should've expanded that short circuit recall from last year. What was your SOC?

Wow, glad you're safe! Not to sound too macabre, but it looked like a great place to have a solo fire; no buildings or other cars right next to your poor, poor truck (other than the utility lines above, and they may be on the other side of the road).

This must be the first documented Lightning fire.
Gotta admit, this is the first incident with the Lightning I’ve seen or heard of for that matter. Several with Teslas but not the Lightning.
There was one up here last year

Edit: thread on it: https://www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/lightning-caught-fire-in-canada.28204/

I never heard any follow up as to the cause.

First of all, I am glad everyone is ok, any idea if the smoke started through the frunk or near the HV pack, lots of recent complaints about the Ohmmu. So sorry to have lost one too soon.

What about rodents chewing on wires and then driving through slush/ice? Are those all low voltage wires that are usually targeted by our furry friends?

I am curious how much time elapsed from the time the pop occurred to the truck being engulfed with flames, so we have an idea how much time we have for ourselves should it ever happen on a freeway or such.

I am also glad you escaped in time and everyone is ok.

This is a very important question.... how long did it take from, you driving down the street, to it escalating to the inferno in the pictures? A few minutes?... 30 minutes?

Those are some very frightening photos! 😐

Wow, crazy, glad you all were able to get out safely and no other property damage. This is a risk with any Lithium Ion battery, although Ford seems to have done well with these batteries and the BMS as there haven’t been many incidents of this. Was your 2023 involved in the battery recall? Interesting that there was no warning.
when you felt and heard the pop, did the truck lose power immediately and have battery warning messages?
Just wondering as others have mentioned the pyrotechnic fuse meant to disconnect the battery when a problem is detected. However I’m guessing you had dendrite formation in one of the battery cells and the pop you heard was a dendrite breaching the separators in one of the cells and shorting out at high amperage which would be a loud pop and immediate fire. Lithium Ion batteries generate their own oxygen when burning, so the fire feeds itself and quickly involves adjacent cells which quickly gets out of hand the way you described.
So glad you’re ok. Ford switched some of the Mustang Mach-E to LiFePo4 batteries in 2024, which is a chemistry that doesn’t have dendrite formation and the associated fire risk, the F-150 never got LiFePo4 to my knowledge, as it makes the battery larger and heavier to get the same capacity, and has worse low temperature performance, so it wouldn’t work for the extended range battery, but could have been used for the standard range

I have the same year, same trim, but different color, not that color matters.

Any mods to the vehicle, like replacing the LVB with a LiFePO4 one from Ohmmu?

That sucks about the truck , Glad you and your family are OK. i had a similar experience with a small battery that comes out of a remote controller for a ceiling fan, stay with me here i got a point i swear. the batteries are like hearing aid batteries about the size of the of a pinky 3 to a pack and one was swollen i grasp that one an holding battery between my thumb and fore finger , the battery was swollen a little and my hand were perspiring BY THE time i mad it down the stairs the battery went off between my fingers IT Had as much energy as a 22 cal round going off in my hand just l little burnt between the fingers but the pop was credible loud and startling , so i can just imagine the sound and power came out of the cell pack when it let go,,,,,lots of energy stored up in things

Oh my goodness! Glad you are safe! This must be the first documented Lightning fire.

Edit: this is the second documented fire
This is FAR more than the second Lightning fire. OEs don't recall vehicles unless there's been a significant problem.
