If this has been discussed I apologize. I did a search but the discussions sounded like it was temperature and comfort adjustments for the cabin of the truck.
Could someone please explain exactly what preconditioning does and when and how to do it?

Thanks.

from my understanding it warms or cools the truck cabin and battery when plugged in. it is only useful if charging as it will use power from charging cable to control climate and not drain battery. It does not make sure the battery pack is at correct temp for charging like Tesla. I have found the truck always keeps temp of battery at optimum charging temp.

Sorry, you are misinformed, when plugged into 240v the truck will keep the battery from getting too cold.
clarification
When plugged into 240v and you have a preconditioning time set, the cab and battery are brought to an optimum temp for range at the set time.
If you are not plugged in then just the cab is brought to the set temp for the set time. Works great.

you misread my response. it does not warm or cool the battery when destination is a charger.

A lot to learn.
Give yourself 3 months to get used to all the new features. Things do occasionally get updated and changed. Be sure to download a copy of the owners manual to your phone for easy access. And of course search the forums for even more information and experiences. Welcome!

Or does it? I've never needed to really test it's effectiveness. Never gets hot enough here.

If you are on the road travelling, this is what happens:
Yes, the Ford Lightning will pre-condition its battery when a DC fast charger is set as a destination or waypoint in Google Maps on Android Auto. This feature, known as En-Route Preconditioning, ensures the battery is at its optimal temperature for fast charging when you arrive.

Here's how it works:
  • Using Google Maps:
When you set a DC fast charger as a destination or waypoint in Google Maps (projected onto your in-vehicle display through Android Auto), the vehicle's system will automatically begin to cool or warm the battery as you approach the charger.

  • Timing:
The preconditioning starts a certain distance from the charger, allowing the battery to reach the optimal temperature before charging begins.

  • No need to manually start:
You don't need to manually trigger preconditioning; the system will automatically do it based on your navigation.

  • Benefits:
This ensures that you can achieve the fastest possible charging speeds at the DC fast charger.

If at home, the pre-conditioning will warm up the battery for cold conditions and if selected, warm up or cool down the cabin temp. Not totally sure if it cools down the battery for hot climates but it may since 2024 models do have the heat pump
