One of the main reasons I finally went to an all electric vehicle was the new aviability to the Tesla charge infrastructure. It is not quite what I thought it was. I got the adapter with the Lightning and it works. The truck usually blocks 2 slots which would be embarrassing at the least if the location was full or near full. The bigger problem so far has been the fact that 2 of the 4 charger locations I have attempted did not work with anything but Tesla. The Ford app does warn me by posting their capability with dashes (___KW)
Ford F-150 Lightning Tesla Superchargers 20250511_121721
rather than numbers. I even called Tesla and they confirmed that many superchargers were for Tesla only.

The price and availability of Tesla Superchargers is disappointing but when available, they are truly plug and play. Through the Ford app, little information on price is available until after the fact but it does keep you informed of the charge progress.

The geeks, err ... software engineers at both Tesla and Ford have a long way to go to electrify American roads but they are headed in the right direction.

The price is available AHEAD OF TIME on both the Ford app as well as the Tesla app.

Compatibility of a location is quite clear in the Ford app before you go there, it has a big red X and Station Not Compatible. You can also put your vehicle and adapter into the Tesla app, and it will no longer show non-compatible locations.

PlugShare and ABRP have similar filters.

Nearly every non-Tesla takes 2 spaces...

Yep unless you pull up at a v4 supercharger where cables are nicely longer you'll always use 2 spots while charging.

In addition, the Tesla chargers should be looked at as an ‘addition’ to our already broad options for charging. It was never intended to be the be-all end-all for our charging options.

So let’s not start thinking we should have access to to every one of them, everywhere, all the time.

Maybe sometime down the road, but let’s just be glade we have what we have for now.

Oh yes. I am really thankful for what we've got. I even apologize for taking 2 slots and thank those I meet for Tesla's including us. I hope I didn't come across as ungrateful, just stating my experience in the week I've owned the Flash.

Non-Tesla membership in the app at $12.99/month will get you a better price per kWh. 2 or 3 charges per month will cover the cost and it’s very simple to start and stop the membership. I use the Tesla chargers almost exclusively when road tripping, especially Central Florida to Texas along I-10.

No reason to park sideways at most locations. Simply nose between 2 chargers.

I don't dcfc much but I did use the superchargers about a dozen times in the first month of ownership. Parking is slightly annoying but only once was it an issue (to be nice I had to wait for an end spot on a busy holiday weekend). Other than that just park on the end, or take two spots and park on the line between chargers.

As far as availability they made a big difference on my road trips. It's very helpful to have them available even if it's just some (most) of them.

Is there a protocol for waiting for a charger when all spots are full? What's the proper way to designate my position in the queue?

Carry a lawn chair with you and pop a squat in front of the station of your choosing until it's available. Good luck.

A2Z EV is testing their DCFC extension cord which will help with the older charging cabinets.

Here is a good video with the engineer who worked on the cable / owns a Rivian personally and takes it off-road often.

DC | NACS Extension Cord | 350A | 6-9 FT (2-3 meters)
