Wow. That gasket is probably Viton or something similar but I'm still surprised it's good for 150,000 miles.

The drive units don’t get nearly as hot as an ice engine, so seals last longer

There is a transmission oil filter on the drive units that probably get changed with the 150,000 mile fluid change.

Could the owner's manual be wrong or out of date. It seems the service schedule is the same for every 10,000 mile interval, and the only added item at 20,000 mile intervals is the cabin air filter.


here's what happens at your 20,000 miles checkup

• Inspect brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, brake linings, hoses and parking brake.
• Inspect half-shaft boots.
• Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension, tie-rod ends, drive shaft and U-joints. Lubricate if equipped with grease fittings.
• Inspect the wheels and related components for abnormal noise, wear, looseness or drag.
• Perform multi-point inspection.
• Rotate the tires, inspect tire wear and measure tread depth.
• Inspect cooling system level and strength
• Replace cabin air filter, if equipped.

When I pulled the snap shots, they were from my local static copy of the manuals downloaded months ago, so, I dialed up FORD.COM, logged in and pulled the current version of the manual based on my VIN, this section is basically the same for the 2022 MY.

There is a filter on each drive unit which i guess would be transmissions.
The tricky part is unless you have access to a service manual, Ford has no reference in the owners manual for servicing the filters or adding oil. The parts catalog I was looking at also does not indicate what the oil in the transmissions is.

Correct. These are not intended to be serviced by the customer. And, you cannot change your brake fluid either, because it has to be connected to their systems in the process.

I have drained and filled my own drive unit fluid. I did it at about 10K miles. Even though the service interval doesn't call for service until 150K, whenever gears are breaking in, there will always be some degree of wear material imparted into the fluid, so just to be prudent, I checked the service manual for the spec (just a standard ULV transmission fluid) and used a fluid extraction pump to remove the old fluid (since after inspecting the fluid, I had no doubts that the filters and filter screens were probably barely contaminated. I then filled with fresh ULV fluid up to proper lefel (up to the fill port).

Super straightforward and now I feel 100% confident in running it all the way to 100K+.

If you guys are interested, I can post pictures and more if you'd like.

Also, as for brake fluid service, any decent bi-directional scanner can execute the bleed function.

The "Service" manual has all the details with good diagrams for skid plate removal and filter location.

The process is little more complicated than pulling a plug and screwing on a filter.

There is a bottom oil pan than must be removed to drop the old oil, inspect for abnormal wear findings in the bottom of the pan near the magnet, the pump pickup screen needs cleaning if any debris is found, then a case mating RTV sealant is used to form a new gasket when it's time to return the pan.

Screw in new filter, pull the oil filler plug to pump in fresh oil, based on position, it is best done with a pneumatic oil pump.

After both have been serviced, run the motors (rack test drive) or on the road test drive, then recheck oil levels after filters are charged with oil, top-off to bottom of plug and restore plug.

Reinstall the skid plates.

Done.

This should be left to SKILLED killed service tech with access to lift and oil pumping equipment.
