Tool batteries and my Lightning are all in the barn... maybe I should move my laptops and power banks out there, too... then I can have all the lithium in one place. lol
Don't forget your ear buds, cell phone, rechargable tooth brush etc...

I’d love more info on how long it took to go up in flames and some more details on what happened after hearing the pops… specifically, what caused you to stop and get out of the truck? The pop noise or smoke in cabin or something else? Did the truck throw any warning or lights come on?

Lastly, where were flames first visible?

We’d have three kids in the backseat so this is definitely a nightmare scenario. Please give us more info

rantings of a madman.

I am left wondering after reading thru 14 pages:
1. it was cold and HV battery had to have the heater on.
2. most likely cabin heater was on also.
it could be the battery conditioning system causing a pack to overheat and swell. this is where I would start looking due to the popping sound d under the truck.

Sidenote I'm more concerned about these fancy lithium jump starters than my truck battery. :cwl:

Dang, that is supposed to be one of the good ones. What happened to it? Just swell up?

yeah, went to take it out of the case to use it and noticed the case was popped open. Figured that wasn't good. Was 9 years old so guess I got my money's worth out of it.

One of my buddies had one in the saddle bag of his Harley, it wasn't that old, he used it to help someone in a car jump their battery, it had the capacity to start the vehicle, but about 5 minutes later began to smoke and bulge, ended up leaving it on the guardrail to let it burn itself out.

Many years ago I had a USB power pack that I powered my SENA helmet comms/camera for long trips, after several years of use, sometimes in very cold weather, she began to bulge, eventually I properly disposed of it.

Odds of fatal commercial plane crash 1 in 11 million.

Odds of an EV fire 4-25 in 100,000. (Depending on the source)
Yes, commercial flights are in a totally different safety realm than EV fires. No one is known to have died in a Ford F-150 Lightning fire yet, though. If you're going to worry about anything, just worry about the risk of plain old death in a traffic accident. It's a LOT higher than the risk of dying in an EV fire (but of course everyone imagines, "It's not going to be me. I'm such a great driver...").

Here's what ChatGPT surmises: the reported deaths are from plain old auto accidents, ICE fires, and EV fires. It says the number of deaths attributed to EV fires is uncertain and may be in the single digits to the low 10s, but that, it says, is partly because EVs are only ~2% of the cars on the road. It says most ICE fire deaths are in an auto accident.

Risk typeDeaths/year
All traffic crashes~42,000
Vehicle fires (mostly gasoline)~500–600
EV fire deathslikely << 100
Commercial airline deaths (U.S.)often 0–tens

I just checked and my Siemens Signia rechargeable hearing aids have lithium ion batteries. I dread what would happen if my hearing aids explode.
