I always thought the park system was a lil wonky, like parking on an incline causes the vehicle to roll backwards a couple inches. It acts like somewhere in the drivetrain/motor there is a disc with holes and an actuator activates to 'lock' the drive wheels. Anyone know how the system actually operates?
You are pretty close. A parking pawl interacts with a gear to lock the transmission. On anything but perfectly flat ground the truck will settle a few inches forward or backward depending on grade.
I deal with this by holding the brakes while shifting to Park and slowly releasing them so it settles smoothly, without bouncing. If you don't want to truck to settle you can set the electronic parking brake.

I park on an upward slope toward my garage, so I have always used my parking brake (even when it doesn’t do it on its own) because it is habit even when not parking at home.I have been setting a parking brake for 30 years. Not stopping now. I pull that little lever every time I park so I don’t have to worry about a pawl. I also park on a downward slope toward my garage so I don’t want any risk.
